Surfing is an increasingly popular sport and it can take you anywhere. Just think of all the destinations around the world where you can go surfing. Here are some of my favourite spots for surfing around the globe. Okay….not many of them are world famous…well only one is…but I tried to pick locations all around the world that are perhaps slightly more low key and therefore cheaper to get to, depending on where you are of course.
The North Antrim Coast, Northern Ireland
This is a good option for anyone who lives in Europe. The North Antrim Coast is cheap to get to because easyJet offers flights to Belfast, the main gateway to Northern Ireland. This is where I learnt to surf and despite the grim weather there are lots of beautiful beaches and excellent waves. My favourite spot is Portrush, a small seaside town.
Punta de Lobos, Chile
Punta de Lobos in Chile is host to the Big Waves World Tour this year. If it is good enough to host these championships, it is an ideal location to enjoy the waves which can reach up to 2 or 3 metres high. The best way to get to this beach is by booking cheap flights to Santiago, the capital, and then hiring a car or taking a bus to Pichilemu. The beach is less than 4 miles from this city. The waves are good all year round.
Zarautz, Spain
The Basque Country is located in the north of Spain and it is famous for its great beaches and climate, which is just right for surfing. You really can surf and even learn to surf at any of the beaches there. However, I would recommend Zarautz which is a coastal city not far from Bilbao. Zarautz is famous for its beaches and surfing background and has been host to championships. To get there, you should fly to Bilbao and then take a train or bus.
Byron Bay, Australia
I would suggest you go to Byron Bay if you would like to learn to surf as there are lots of schools there. This coastal town is just over 100 miles from Brisbane so you should fly there and then make your way to Byron Bay.
The Jeffreys Bay Surf Break, Eastern Cape South Africa
This is among the most famous surfing spots in the world and the best time to catch the waves is between May and September. The Jeffreys Bay is about one hour from Port Elizabeth and this city is the main gateway to the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa.
